Engaging Students

Last week, FES students had a new experience in our Library Commons. Knowing that students often stick to one kind of book Library Media Specialist, Nicole Murray, wanted to encourage students to branch out and get a taste for different genres. So, she transformed the Library Commons into a Genre Cafe. The tables were all set with (electric) candles, flowers, and plates. There was soft music playing and the lights were dimmed. Each table was dedicated to a specific genre and students spent time at many of the tables “sampling” the literature (complete with pairings of English crumpets or a nice aged french cheese) and rating the books in different categories. Students were overheard saying “Wow – this book looks great!” and “I can’t wait to read this one!” This is just one example of the countless ways that teachers seek to engage students in learning.
